What I am good at

  • Extraction that goes inside the implementation, visualisation that serves the business goal.

I work alongside the business from the definition of the metric itself, and stay with it through to the insight it was asked for. From IoT systems to web and mobile, I have broad experience of building software, so I extract data with a deep understanding of the implementation behind it. Visualisation and analysis are the same — I put generative AI to work and deliver quickly, in the form the person will actually use. Underneath that, I can shape the data, the context around it and the ETL that feeds it for the age of generative AI, so that people and AI alike can work with what is there.

    The traits behind it

  • I can draw the whole system, and cover operation and reaching users on my own, alongside generative AI.

On my own time I have shipped an online card game, President Noir, on Steam, and the iOS app BigTap on the App Store. Planning, UI design, implementation in Go and Swift, infrastructure as code with Terraform on AWS, store listings in multiple languages and the work of getting people to install them — all of it is mine. Beyond writing code, I can take on the whole of building a system to solve a problem. I draw the overall shape myself, and put generative AI to work to get it into form quickly.

    The traits behind it

What sets me apart

  • I can design the whole system, not one layer of it

  • I read the code, then deliver the data

  • I do not stop at what the tool allows

  • I go and learn the business itself

  • I put generative AI to full use

      Metadata and a data catalog

Table definitions and ER diagrams were scattered and every extraction started with an investigation, so I organised the metadata and built a data catalog.

      Company-wide data requests

      An HTML dashboard platform

BI tools meant repetitive GUI work with little flexibility and no review trail, so I built a delivery form where requirements and data definitions are written in Markdown and generative AI produces the implementation.

    Moved into data engineering

With generative AI spreading and the bar for implementation falling, I decided a day job pays off more when it is specialised. Data is what generative AI draws its knowledge from, so I moved into data engineering — to build the mechanisms for it, and to get close enough to the business for it to be worth something. Alongside that I keep my personal projects, where planning, operation and reaching people are all mine.

Interested in the data a system produces, and the value it creates

In my third year of university I joined the student team at the Aichi IoT Promotion Lab and built an IoT system that went into service at a working screw factory. What mattered turned out not to be that I had got something running, but that counting production in real time — which nobody there had been able to do — became material for improving yield. My interest moved from the system itself to the data it produces and the change that data makes to the business.

An IoT system for counting production

With a student team, I built and put into service an IoT system that automatically counted and displayed production at a working screw factory, where it had been counted by eye.

    Got interested in the web

A first-year university class had me write a single-file HTML page and put it online. Designing something anyone can reach, content and all, was what I enjoyed, and web work followed from there. Over the summer I put up a site of my own — FarPoint.

    • Aug 2016

      FarPoint v1

The first version, on rented hosting, built with a framework of my own making in PHP. A profile and a blog, plus a fortune drawn from the QR code on my new year cards.

I studied computing and software broadly, and in the laboratory I worked on signal processing for the periodic analysis of biological and other signals — both the theory behind the computation and experiments aimed at real applications. Alongside that I built IoT systems and smartphone applications as part of a prefectural programme, and took part in hackathons.

    Got interested in writing programs

A third-year junior high class had me build a simple rock-paper-scissors game in Excel VBA. Making something behave exactly as I meant it to was the appeal, and I kept teaching myself from there.

A rock-paper-scissors app in Excel VBA

The first program I wrote. The assignment stopped at a working game, so with the time left over I added a mode where the computer always wins.

    Got interested in computers

Using a computer to play with the sound and photos from a Nintendo DSi got me interested in editing media on a computer for its own sake. I made news bulletins for the family out of the photos and video and published them at home.

Personal work

The apps and services I publish are gathered under the brand rpaka-farm. Alongside the products themselves I build and run the platform behind them: infrastructure, support site, landing pages and the announcement flow.

It covers not only planning and development but the operation that follows release, and the short videos that bring people in.
